A Stormy Evening Beach Session | Metro Detroit Family Photographer

There’s something magical about photographing families I’ve worked with time and time again. Building that connection over the years adds a layer of comfort and joy to every session, and this recent one with the Erving family was no exception. We planned their session by the beach, knowing how much they love the mix of sand, waves, and sky—and wow, did nature put on a show for us that evening!

As we arrived, the skies were already beginning to shift. Big, moody clouds rolled in, painting a dramatic backdrop that set the scene beautifully. We could hear the distant rumble of thunder, but that didn’t stop this adventurous family from making the most of every moment. The weather held off just long enough to create some of the most dynamic and memorable images, and the sprinkle of rain at the end only added to the story.

What made this session even more special was how much fun everyone had. The kids couldn’t get enough of splashing in the water and chasing each other along the shore. Mom and Dad were all smiles, fully embracing the playful chaos. By the time the whole family waded into the water together, it was pure magic—laughter echoing across the beach, little waves rippling around their feet, and a connection so genuine it practically glowed in the images.

And let me tell you, Mom knocked it out of the park with her styling! Every detail—from the color palette to the textures—came together seamlessly against the stormy skies and soft tones of the beach. The result? Timeless images that I know will look stunning printed big and displayed in their home.

As the session wrapped up with the first drops of rain, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for families like this one. They trust me to capture their love and their moments just as they are—messy, playful, and real. And every time we work together, I’m reminded why I love what I do so much.
